Germany has contracted MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall to develop a containerised high-energy laser weapon system for the German Navy, covering the full kill chain from reconnaissance/track to engagement. A demonstrator has already been sea-tested on frigate SACHSEN with extensive firings and is aimed at improving ship defense, especially against drones, with operational capability targeted for 2029.
