The UK’s Excalibur extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV) successfully released a US Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo in a joint US-UK proof-of-concept test at BUTEC. This demonstrates weapon integration/interchangeability and moves armed autonomous undersea systems from ISR/mine roles toward offensive torpedo employment, enabling new undersea tactics and risk-forward scouting/strike concepts.
