U.S. Coast Guard forms Special Missions Command to unify deployable specialized forces

The U.S. Coast Guard is creating a new Special Missions Command (SMC) to consolidate and standardize training, readiness, doctrine, and procurement for its deployable specialized forces under a single operational commander. This is an organizational/doctrinal shift from geographic to functional force management intended to speed multi-unit integration for complex maritime threats and improve interoperability with the Joint Force.
