The U.S. Air Force and partners tested a newly developed low-cost 16-element HF receiver array paired with the HAARP transmitter to demonstrate bistatic skywave over-the-horizon detection of aircraft beyond line-of-sight radar coverage. The novelty is repurposing an existing high-power HF transmitter (HAARP) as an OTH radar illuminator with a new receiver architecture to improve Arctic air domain awareness at potentially lower cost.
