This kind of incentive system sounds clean and rational on paper. In practice, it can bend a war in directions you don’t fully control — and not always toward the outcomes you think you’re buying.
From what’s been shared publicly, Ukraine is using a point system that rewards battlefield “kills,” and that system is shaping what drone units choose to hit. The reporting says it’s steering them away from easy targets and toward more strategic Russian targets. Not just “something nearby,” but things that matter more: equipment, logistics, and other assets that can change the pace of fighting.
As a company that builds drone detection radar systems and AI fusion from different sensors, I have a strong reaction to this: the points system is not just an admin tool. It’s a targeting policy. It quietly tells every operator, “This is what we value.” And people will chase what gets valued, especially when the environment is brutal, resources are limited, and success needs to be proven fast.
There’s an obvious upside. If you reward impact, you might get more impact. If you’re trying to stretch limited drones, limited time, and exhausted crews, you don’t want them wasting effort on targets that look good in a clip but don’t change the situation. In that sense, steering drone units toward strategic targets is smart. It’s also emotionally easier to defend. People can accept risk and loss when they believe it’s buying something real.
But here’s the part that worries me: when you attach points to kills, you get optimization. And optimization always finds the edges.
Imagine a unit that can either take a low-risk shot at something small, or spend hours stalking a higher-value target through bad weather, jamming, and air defenses. If the points heavily favor the bigger target, they’ll push deeper. That can be good. It can also get them killed, burn scarce drones, and create a pattern the other side can learn.
Because once a system trains behavior, the enemy gets a vote.
If Ukrainian drone teams start concentrating on “strategic” targets, Russia will respond by hardening those targets, hiding them better, moving them differently, and surrounding them with more detection and countermeasures. That’s not speculation; it’s how every adversary acts when a threat becomes consistent. The points system might improve target selection this month and make those targets dramatically harder to reach next month.
This is where our world — detection and sensor fusion — becomes more than a technical detail. Strategic targets are usually protected targets. They sit under layers of defenses, including radar drone detection, electronic warfare, and low-tech measures like decoys and disciplined movement. If incentives drive more attacks into that space, the detection-and-response cycle tightens. More drones show up, so more sensors get deployed. More sensors get deployed, so more drones get knocked down. That loop can get brutal fast.
And there’s another problem: what gets counted becomes what gets done.
If a point system rewards “kills,” what happens to missions that are strategically important but don’t end in a clean kill? Surveillance that prevents an ambush. A probing run that forces the enemy to reveal a jammer. A flight that confirms a decoy so a later strike doesn’t waste a weapon. These missions can be the difference between winning and losing, but they’re harder to score. If they’re undervalued, they get squeezed out by point-chasing.
I’m not saying Ukraine should stop measuring results. I’m saying this kind of system can make your forces more predictable and more fragile if you don’t design it with reality in mind.
Here’s a concrete scenario. Say you’re a drone operator and you know a certain road is used for moving valuable equipment. You could hunt a vehicle you’re likely to hit today and score points. Or you could spend time tracking patterns, passing coordinates, and setting up a strike later when the real target moves. If points reward the “hit” more than the “setup,” you’ll get more hits — and fewer smart setups. That’s a trade. It might be the right trade in a desperate phase. It might be a terrible trade if it burns your ability to shape the battlefield over time.
There’s also the risk of distortion. When people compete for points, they don’t just work harder. They sometimes work “to the system.” That can mean choosing targets that score well rather than targets that matter most, or pushing claims upward because careers and status get attached. Even with good intentions, fog and speed make clean verification hard.
To be fair, the alternative isn’t clean either. Without a system, you can get chaos, favoritism, and wasted effort. Units might chase headlines, commanders might overvalue personal instincts, and scarce drones might be spent on targets that don’t change anything. A points system can discipline that. It can also bring a sense of fairness: you did the work, you get credit.
I just don’t buy the idea that you can turn killing into a neat scoreboard and not change behavior in risky ways. You’re not only rewarding outcomes; you’re shaping what people believe is “success.” And when you shape that, you shape movement, risk-taking, coordination, and even how the enemy builds its defenses around radar drone detection and other layers.
If Ukraine’s point system is really steering drone units toward more strategic Russian targets, the hard question isn’t whether that’s smart today — it’s whether the system is flexible enough to keep being smart when Russia adapts and the easiest “strategic” targets stop being reachable.
So where do you draw the line between rewarding visible kills and rewarding the less visible work that actually wins the next month of the war?
